Following two hours of public comment at the September 7 meeting of Rappahannock’s Board of Zoning Appeals, MCI Telecommunications withdrew its application to place a tower on the top of Bessie Belle Mountain.
In a surprise move, MCI withdrew the controversial application with the understanding that the meeting’s record be incorporated into hearings on a future re-application.
The maneuver had citizens muttering; but BZA chairman Lee Bird explained after the meeting that he had agreed to the deal in order to offer “full, fair consideration” to the request. “Anything we do is challengeable in court,” Bird stated, “the better the record, the better the opportunity to defend it.”
