The board unanimously agreed to send a resolution to the governor’s office asking that Rappahannock be added to the list of counties seeking drought disaster emergency status. However, they made a point of adding the word “horticulture” to the proposed resolution because of the importance of fruit to the local economy.
Estes pointed out that horticulture is the second largest industry in Rappahannock County. The drought has created a bigger disaster with fruit than cattle in this county, according to Estes, and different government programs may be available to orchardists than are to farmers.
"I think orchardists have really been left out in the cold,” commented Supervisor H.B. Wood, an orchardist in Woodville. He recalled several years ago when he “just let them hit the ground” when similar undersized apples were a glut on the market.
According to Estes, National Fruit in Winchester, major purchaser of the county’s crop, will not buy any juice apples this year because of their size.
Dental Trailer
In other business, supervisors approved an amendment to the zoning ordinance to allow dental trailers. The change, previously approved by the planning commission, will say that “no ordinance shall prohibit” the use of mobile homes for express purposes of medical or dental care.
