But the reaction to that inconvenience was minor compared to the crash nine days later when a Super Constellation and a DC-7 came together over the Grand Canyon at about 20,000 feet, killing all 128 aboard.
Then government statistics on the fatalities resulting from flying via scheduled airlines were released, showing an eight-fold increase between 1966 and 1966. And the age of jets lay just ahead.
Concern over the safety hazards posed by the capital’s crowded skies brought pressure to bear and in January 1968, President Dwight D. Eisenhower ended an epic power struggle by selecting the location then known simply as “Chantilly” to become what is now Dulles International Airport.
Almost from the time it opened in 1941, National Airport’s inability to handle the growth of air travel into the capital area had been recognized, but it took the president to break the deadlock over where a second airport would be located — Chantilly, Burke or Annandale in Fairfax County.
