Like a castle fortress dominating the moors of Spain, North Wales Mansion originally held court more than 566 acres that comprised the Crown’s first land grant in this area, dating to 1716. The imposing stone manor house has seen its estate grow to 3,200 acres since, covering the rolling meadows of some of the Piedmont’s most famous blue grass horse country.
Considered one of this country’s finest examples of Georgian architecture, the 37-room mansion has walls six feet thick in some places. Building began in 1718 with an army of skilled craftsmen.
The lines and proportions of North Wales are classic.
Exquisite carvings and panelings decorate the high ceilings and beautiful mantlepieces of the interior A carved walnut grand stairway leads from the first floor entrance hall. Fireplaces warm the paneled library, reception room and drawing room. The ballroom with marble floors echoes with violins and the swish of evening gowns from the past.
Each of North Wales’ 11 master bedrooms has a fireplace and an adjoining bath with gold plated fixtures and brass and copper plumbing. Its kitchen is equipped to handle more than 200 guests. In the basement trophy room, a hidden door leads to secret wine vaults and storage rooms.
