Indeed, with the statewide election problems of this year seemingly well under control, party strategists have already nervously turned their attention to 1965 when the all-important races for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general will top the political calendar.
In truth, the state convention this year will be little more than a smokescreen to cover the early jockeying for position in the races for the party’s nomination in these statewide contests. The same, of course, was true of the Democratic Convention which ended Saturday in Norfolk.
The "love feast” aspects of the GOP conclave will end abruptly at the doors of hundreds of hotel rooms behind which political alliances will be formed, tactical schemes brain-stormed and the weaknesses of prospective opponents for the nominations analyzed.
