tains condensation in the form of a cloud or when it contains surface dust and debris. Tornadoes vary greatly in size, intensity, and appearance.

Two or more tornadoes can occur simultaneously, extending downward from the same thunderstorm. A tornado warning sign, in addition to severe lightening, heavy rains and strong winds, is the presence of large hail-stones. While hail may or may not precede a tornado, the portion of a thunderstorm adjacent to large hail is often the area where strong to violent tornadoes are most likely to occur. Tornado winds may produce a loud sound similar to that of the combined roars of several jet engines and this noise might be the only clue to a tornadoes’ presence during a heavy rain or at night. Although most tornadoes occur during the midafternoon or early evening, they can occur at any time, often with little or no warning. According to long-term studies by NOAA, the month of peak tornado activity for Virginia is July, though the peak season nation-wide is April through June.

Tornado Safety

When the likelihood of a tornado occurs, Local National Weather Service offices issue tornado warnings to the county via Virginia state communications networks and directly to the public via radio and television stations. Two terms to remember are:

Tornado Watch- which indicates that conditions are right for a tornado to develop and that the sky should be watched, and:

Tornado Warningwhich indicates a tornado has been sighted or spotted on radar. Warnings will give the location of the tornado, and the area immediately affected by the warning.

When a Tornado Watch is announced, keep your radio or television tuned to a local station for information and advice. Also keep watching the sky, especially
