The production of the thought-provoking play “No Exit” by Jean-Paul Sartre as performed by the Source Theatre players at the Gay St. Theater on May 19 was a disappointment.
The modernization of the play by it's director Dan Kolvak simply does not work.
Too many liberties are taken with the text and language. Sartre wanted the audience to think, not laugh. “No Exit” is not a comedy, it is a cerebral play, a modem morality play whose three chief characters are doomed to hell for crimes against simple humanity. As interpreted Saturday the players cavorted about the stage like unemployed Marx brothers trying out for parts in a farce by Feydeau.
