brought back to life the centuries old economic rivalry between their state and Virginia by proposing that Friendship Airport near Baltimore (now BaltimoreWashington International) be designated the alternate to handle traffic above National’s capacity.
Eisenhower sent his special assistant Elwood (Pete) Quesada, a colorful fighter pilot commander of World War II, on a final evaluation tour and when Quesada recoitamended Chantilly, Eisenhower didn’t hesitate. His decision put Dulles where it is and, again following the ex. pilot’s suggestion, bestowed the name of his Secretary of State, John Foster Dulles, on the facility.
Built on a 10,000-acre site, Dulles was planned for both growth and technological advances in flight. Today, its great runways take the supersonic Concorde in stride. Architect Eero Saarinen, designer of the terminal, control, tower and service buildings, pioneered the “mobile lounge” concept of taking passengers to the plane rather than vice versa. Today, his original Crysler-built lounges are still in service.
Described by aviation professionals as superb, the airport has drawn compliments ever since it went into operation in 1962. Even that normally staid British newspaper, the London Observer, praised the airport for its “revolutionary concept,” calling Dulles International “this noble design for the jet age.”
A proposal to appropriate money for planning and design of a terminal expansion at Dulles is now before Congress and an update on the airport’s 20-year master plan is scheduled for later this summer..The decisions made then should stretch Dulles’ claim as a manmade wonder of Virginia’s northern Piedmont into the next decade and beyond.
