County Moves On Landfill
Rappahannock supervisors will attempt to purchase 100-plus acres sooii for the county’s first landfill. Supervisors convened in special session October 26 to discuss purchase of property presently up for sale. The supervisors did not reveal the location of the proposed landfill site. Discussion of the proposed purchase took place in executive session.
Supervisors wanted to move quickly to attempt to purchase the property. According to Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke, another party also is interested.
The board authorized Supervisors Hubert Gilkey III and Nelson Lane to enter into negotiations for the property. The supervisors appropriated $185,000 for purchase of the proposed site.
Even if purchased, it could be some time before the county actually has its own landfill due to numerous tests and studies that would take place prior to actual purchase to insure the proposed site would be environmentally safe. “It’s extremely unlikely we’d have it in place by June next year,” Commonwealth’s Attorney Luke said.
The county must decide by June 30,1985 whether or not to continue its contract with Community Trash Removal, Inc. of Culpeper to remove trash from dumpster locations throughout the county.
• Closed, Open Election Day
Election Day is Tuesday, November 6, a state holiday for government employees. At least one county government agency will be open for business as usual: The office of Family Guidance Services (formerly the Rappahannock Mental Health Clinic) will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 8:15 p.m. on Election Day.
All other county and state offices will be closed Election Day. In addition, Rappahannock National Banfc will be closed.
Farmers and Merchants Bank of Flint Hill will be open Election Day. The Rappahannock County Library also will be open.
