The Democrat entered the race only 13 days before the Democrats’ district nominating convention May 12. A quick tour of the district and the backing of potent political ally, Del. Alson H. Smith Jr. (D-Winchester), helped Costello win the nomination over Charlottesville banker Francis H. Fife.
Since then the relative unknown in the expansive 7th District has overcome his identity problem with a demanding campaign schedule which has taken him 27,000 miles by auto in the last 90 days.
But the campaign tactic which probably has drawn the most attention to his candidacy (attacks on Slaughter’s voting record in the Virginia legislature) also has drawn cries of foul from his opponent.
