Frazier opts for no free trade that’s not "mutually beneficial.” He said protectionism has been the norm for countries other than America for years. He said that while he was in Japan in 1971, a Ford Thunderbird that cost $7,000 in the states was priced at $21,000 there. “They’ve had a protection apparatus all the time,” he said.
Frazier said it was “ludicrous” to take jobs from Americans and ask them to bear the financial burden of the world through their taxes.
• Abortion: Frazier opposes abortion in all cases other than the “life of the mother, who probably has responsibility to her husband, children or society.”
With reservation, Frazier would allow abortions in instances of a malformed fetus. He said that decision should be made by parents with guidance from their physician and their religion. In instances of rape or incest, Frazier said, “I see no virtue in taking an innocent life as reciprocal or vengeance for a crime committed by another.”
Frazier said in no case did he wish to drive abortion back into alleys. He said he believes life begins with conception, and that more educational and counseling opportunities should be made available.
Frazier added that he is against anything he considers an attack on the family as an institution. He tied abortion into the larger question of morality: Fornication and copulation outside of marriage is a sin, he said.
The candidate called pornography “as dangerous as illicit drugs.” He said it should be defined, then eliminated by \ law. He said the elimination of pornography would not be a threat to freedom of speech or the press.
“(Pornography) leads to murders and (indescribable crimes against women. It can be traced back,” he said.
• Equal Rights Amendment: Frazier said he would support the Equal Rights Amendment if the word “sex” were changed to “gender” and if women would not be drafted or treated the same as men under combat conditions.
• The Federal Deficit: Frazier said he’d increase government revenue and decrease government Bpending to eliminate the federal deficit and balance the budget. To put everyone back
