Lewis M. Costello, Democratic candidate in the 7th District congressional race, is new to the political arena. He has never held elected office.
But the 51-year-old Winchester tax attorney sells himself as the best replacement for retiring seven-term Rep. J. Kenneth Robinson because Costello believes he can accomplish more than either of his two challengers.
For one, Costello said he has concrete ideas about how to deal with a number of issues — ideas he claims his Republican rival, D. French Slaughter, lacks. And, as a Democrat, he would be among the majority in the House and would have a better opportunity to transform those ideas into legislation, he said.
Eight years younger than Slaughter, the Democrat also believes he would have a better chance to gain seniority in the House.
Costello characterizes himself as a fiscal conservative but not a “social conservative.” He said health and social programs are vital.
Costello also maintains he is an independent-minded candidate and has fought repeated Republican attempts to tie him ideologically with liberal Rep. Thomas P. “Tip” O’Neill IDMass.), Speaker of the House.
