Older Virginians are more dependent on federal programs than any other age group to maintain a decent standard of living. They are, for example, highly dependent on Social Security for their economic security.

Over 50 percent of older Americans rely on Social Security for more than half of their income, and 20 percent rely on Social Security for virtually all of their income. Virginia’s Social Security recipients have received $146 million less under Reagan than they would have under policies in effect when the President took office.
