He points to an ear of sweet corn that’s “just silkin’ out” and talks about the rows he planted in mid-July. “I gambled on corn (but it’s) the only thing I gambled on,” he says. “It takes longer to mature. ”
The 90-to 100-day gestation period for corn makes it the most dubious fall planting. According to Mr. Lyne the “average” date for the first killing frost is October 20. “I’m hoping the frost is not too early,” he says, noting it’s October 25 and it hasn’t hit yet.
