Weather Watchers Wanted
The Department of Emergency Services is seeking volunteers to assist in a planned weather emergency warning program for Rappahannock County. See the accompanying article inside.
• Gid Brown Sparkles
Gid Brown Hollow looks a lot better, thanks to five heroic citizens of Rappahannock who thrashed their way through endless garbage lining Route 622. Not only did they thrash their way through the garbage, they picked it up and bagged it.
The clean-up crew consisted of: Eugene and Margaret Tucker, Eric Kvames, Jensen Kvames, and Ken Hoffel. See pictures inside.
• Nancy Baird To Speak
The annual meeting of the Rappahannock Historical Society will be held at the Society’s building Friday, May 3, at 7:30 p.m.
The program for the evening will be a speech by Nancy Chappelear Baird, nationally known author and genealogist. Mrs. Baird’s topic will be “The Journals of Amanda Virginia Edmonds: Lass of the Mosby Confederacy. She will also talk on the Chappelear family of Rappahannock County.
j • Executive Session
During the School Board’s executive session on Tuesday, April 9, the Board approved the participation of Scott Currie, a teacher at the high school, in the Fulbright Exchange Program.
The Board also accepted the resignation of Don Dawson as a high school physical education teacher and the varsity basketball coach. Sandra Brown was approved as a substitute teacher, and the Board approved Carson Menefee as a substitute custodian.
A listing of certificated personnel was approved by the Board for the 85-86 school year. The School Board accounted at 12:40 a.m.
• National Award Winner
The United States Achievement Academy announced recently that Kellie Michele Updike has been named a 1985 United States National Award winner in cheerleading. This award is a prestigious honor vefy few students can ever hope to attain. The Academy recognizes less than 10 percent of all American high school students.
Updike, who attends Culpeper County Junior High School, was nominated for this National Award by PajV Dudley, cheerleading sponsor. Updike will appear in the United Sta V Achievement Academy Official Yearbook, published nationally. x
Updike is the daughter of Mr. and Mis. H. Taylor Updike, Jr., and the granddaughter of Mr. H. Taylor Updike, Sr. of Washington, Va.
• Book Discussion Continues
On Monday, April 22 at 7:30 p.m., Dr. Joel Foreman of George Mason University will discuss A Childhood: The Biography of a Place by Harry Crews at the Rappahannock Library.
This autobiography is a vivid portrayal of Bacon County, Georgia in the 1930s and 1940s, a place where “being alive was like being awake in a nightmare,” says Crews.
A Childhood is the fourth book in the National Endowment for the Humanities book discussion series; “Growing Up in the South.” It is free and open to the public. The books being discussed are available at the library for loan or sale.
The last book in the series, A Death in the Family by James Agee, .will be discussed on Monday, May 6.
