The generous donation of Stuart’s Field given by Mrs. Stuart last year is gradually being gift wrapped after the manner and terms of the covenant. The wrapping is actually a three board fence designed to enclose the little league ball grounds and entire eight acres.
Action was stimulated last fall by the then president, Wayne Kanaby, who called for plans and procedure. Since the club’s funds are for community assistance, responsibility for materials and labor falls upon Ruritan members. Thus, the gift of 1,000 feet of seasoned lumber by one member was followed by several donations of needed posts.
With these initial materials in hand, Saturday work crews were organized. However, posing an immediate threat to progress were three large locust trees located on the 20 foot strip of lawn given by Mrs. Stuart to widen the existing right of way.
The Amissville Ruritans have many good Rappahannock friends. One, Henry Diggs, heard of the club’s need. With a fine sense of public concern, Mr. Diggs and an employee, David Haught, brought a fork lift and felled the trees, saving days of man labor.
Ruritans sawed and split the logs, and before the year’s end, over 300 feet.
