front of the judges,” Laura said. “I always pick out sheep that do really well as far as gaining weight, but they can’t walk.” April complained that her problem was just the opposite from her sister’s.
“It was funny at last year’s show because Laura’s lamb jumped straight into the air and landed on its back with its four legs stuck up into the air,” Joyce said.
Despite her frustrations with the lambs, Laura has had a winning history at the show. Last year, her biggest wins were with her goat, Pansy. Laura and Pansy came away with the Grand Champion Alpine Doe award and first place in the four year milker category. Laura also received the award for the best milking herd.
The Adams’ have only two goats now, and all agree that that is enough. “We had so many goats at one time that we were feeding goat’s milk to the dog, the cat, the sheep and even back to the goats, and we still had to pour out buckets of milk,” Joyce said.
Milking is the reason April gave up her goats and decided to work only with the lambs. “Goats are a lot of work since you have to milk them every morning and every evening,” Laura said. “They are a continual project, and you’re tied down to a schedule with them.”
This year, the members of Laura’s Goat Club decided to start keeping a scrapbook on each goat’s achievements over the years. The
