department has already responded to 50 since the beginning of this year.
The increases in the number of calls translates into an increase in operational costs. “It costs $65 to take the ambulance out on a call and at least $100 for one of the fire engines,” Roach said.
The department is presently involved in its annual general fund drive when letters asking for support are sent to every property owner in the Hampton district. There are also fund raising activities on the Fourth of July and in the fall when a turkey shoot is held.
Besides a lack of funds, Roach said that another problem that is countywide is the emergency calls that come in during the day. “The county has to realize that there is a problem and do something about it,” Roach said. “It’s not unusual for it to take 20 minutes to get an ambulance out during the day.”
All of the volunteers present agreed that the county’s dispatch center has improved the response times. “The dispatch center has improved the organization and allowed people from the different departments to work together on calls,” Hannon said. ‘The dispatch system has improved our ability to communicate with one another, and the dispatchers are our life line.”

It’s no wonder that American consumers will be honored by a special week Monday through Sunday, April 22-28. They only spent two trillion, 215 dollars in 1983.
That is two-thirds of the gross national product, and is just cause for this nation to observe National Consumer Week. Six consecutive presidents have thrown the power of this land’s highest office behind the Consumer Bill of Rights.
Those rights include the right to safety, the right to be informed, the right to choose and the right to be heard.
Virginia Knauer, head of the U.S. Office of Consumer Affairs, points out that “among those rights is the right to consumer education, which is the very cornerstone of consumerism.” It was her office that got the special week to honor the consumer.
