Mr. Banner bought the 10-yearold Cougar II gelding two years ago from Harry Wight of Leesburg. The 27-year-old rider from Washington, D.C., plans to race his horse in sanctioned meets in Tennessee and Kentucky later this year.
The day’s closest timber race was the ladies’ race, fifth on the seven-race card, which saw a new face in the winner’s circle.
Patti Cassel took the early lead on her Bush Ruler but was overtaken at the fifth fence by Lauren Smith on her father’s Bibbit. From that point on Bibbit led the six-horse field, surviving a last-minute challenge from Eva Dahlgren and Ahwaz in the stretch to win by a very short nose with a time of 6:20 minutes for the three miles.
Only three horses started in the second race, a maiden timber contest. But it was an exciting race with a popular winner.
Don Yovanovich took the lead on San Mar Farm’s Svahama stretching the gap to as much as eight lengths at some points in the race. But the other two horses were not out of contention.
