planned and had to quickly choose an alternate route. Then, on his way back to the finish line after rounding the second course marker, Shah refused twice at a fence, losing valuable time.
But Ms. Woods, manager of Greenwood Farm at The Plains, was still able to win the race, much to the joy of the many Orange County Hunt fans rooting her on at the finish.
Finishing in second place was Lannie Simmons on George with third going to Frank Zurich on Sailor and fourth to Dawn Dugan on Copyright.
Miss Dugan was awarded a trophy for first-placed junior, an honor she has won every year for the last four years.
Last year the young Catharpin rider won the Ruhsam Challenge Plate for old-fashioned point-to-points.
For much of this season Miss Dugan has used Copyright for pairs racing with her partner Amy Krenytzky and the pair currently lead the junior hunter pairs division. Prior to the Orange County race Miss Dugan had ridden her Sharp Start in the old-fashioned races. Unfortunately Sharp Start badly injured himself when he overreached on a landing at the Middleburg Hunt’s old-fashioned point-to-point two weeks ago.
Miss Dugan was surprised by Copyright’s performance in the oldfashioned race.
“He can’t run a lick,” she explained. “That’s the first time I’ve ever asked him to run and he took off. He did great.”
With the old-fashioned races all over, this year’s winner of the Ruhsam Challenge Plate is Lannie Simmons of Amissville. Ms. Simmons won the first race of the season, the Warrenton Hunt old-fashioned, and finished fourth at Rappahannock and second at Middleburg for a season total of 12 points.
This will be the second time the Old Dominion Hunt member has won the trophy. She also won it in 1981 on NashveFs Legacy.
