OATLANDS, Apr. 14 — The Eustis Cup was a bit of an experiment for Private Gary, and one which almost cost him the race.
Donna (Truslow, Private Gary’s trainer) wanted him to learn how to rate,” jockey D. M. “Speedy” Smithwick Jr. explained after the race. “He’s run on the front end the whole time and she wanted to see how he would do behind other horses.”
But, having to run behind other horses for perhaps the first time in his life, Private Gary grew bored with the race.
“You can rate him, but he’s gotta be nearer the other horses,” Mr. Smithwick told Ms. Truslow after the race. “He started to lose interest being so far back.”
At the last fence Private Gary was eight lengths behind Classic Line, ridden by Don Yovanovich. But coming round the corner at the bottom of Oatlands’ long uphill stretch the 11-yearold Researching gelding suddenly seemed to take interest in the race.
