“To my knowledge, we will be the only department in the county with the capability to transmit the EKG directly over the phone,” Roach said. The med radio and the phone patch will form a direct link between the unit and doctors in the hospital who can instruct the cardiac tech to use certain medications or the defibulator when needed.
The defibulator is part of the heart monitoring system, and is used to administer electrical shocks to patients who have gone into cardiac arrest. The doctors could also tell the cardiac tech which drugs and intravenous fluids the patient requires.
A shock/trauma trained volunteer can also administer some drugs and begin I Vs. One member of the Washington Department, Jackie Estes, recently completed his shock/trauma training.
Medic units began to appear in this country about 10 years ago. “We are lucky in Rappahannock, being a small county, to have two medic units,” Roach said. The other medic unit is operated by the Flint Hill Volunteer Fire Department. “We cover the Washington, Sperryville, Castleton areas, but if Flint Hill ever has a problem getting their unit out, we cover the rest of the county as well,” Roach said.
