Endurance, or long distance, riding is becoming a very popular sport with horse owners in this country and abroad and the sport is even being considered for a future Olympic event.
“So many people are not aware of the extent that this sport has gripped the country,” explains Carmen Sutton, a member of the Old Dominion Ride that sponsors several endurance rides in the Blue Ridge and Massanutten mountains.
“This is one of the most extensive and inexpensive ways to use a horse,” continues Mrs. Sutton. “It is a natural extension of the everyday use of a horse. The idea of the sport is to bring a horse up. to perform over a long distance and* time and any horse owner can do it.”
The Dominion Ride organization has been holding endurance rides each year for the past four years and the quantity and level of competition in the events has grown considerably.
The group works with the Park and Forest Services to build and maintain a network of distance riding trails in the George Washington National Forest and the Shenandoah National Park near Front Royal. This network of trails is used for the group’s 50 and 100-mile competitive endurance rides and a 100-mile run held in conjunction with the endurance rides.
The concept of endurance riding, according to Mrs. Sutton, is to be able to complete the ride and have the horse come through in sound condition.
“The idea is to finish and still have some horse left,” says Mrs. Sutton. “It is different from competitive trail riding though. Fatigue is to be expected.
