The Rappahannock Panthers lost to George Mason’s undefeated baseball team last Friday night for two reasons 1) they committed 7 errors and 2) they left about a hundred men on base. Otherwise the Panthers played well against a team that has either tied for or won the district championship every year since 1981.
Going into the game, Rappahannock was 1 - 2 overall and 1 - 1 in the district. George Mason was 3-0 overall with a 2 - 0 record in the district. Panther Coach Don Dawson knew this was a big game. He said beforehand “We’ve got to win this game to have a chance at the district. If we can beat this team, we can beat anybody.” Dawson thought the two starting pitchers-11 Porter for the Panthers, Crawford for Mason-were among the best in the league. The game promised to be a dual between two sharp pitchers. But sloppy fielding by the Panthers prevented the dual from taking place.
When reminded before the game of Mason’s undefeated record, Jeff Porter responded with confidence, “So was Georgetown before Villanova got to them.” But the miracle (if it would have been that) didn’t occur this time.
