The first home track meet of the season for Rappahannock on Wednesday, April 10 ended with the Rappahannock boys continuing their undefeated home record, and with a disappointing loss for the girls. The final scores were: Rappahannock boys, 70, Page County, 65; Rappahannock girls, 50, Page, 68.
The Page County boys had held tne lead in the meet until the last two events, but Rappahannock pulled the win out with an exciting finish. “Going into the next to the last event, the boys were seven points behind Page, then Ronnie Atkins and Jonathan Watson placed one and two in the two mile to tie the score up,” Coach Ann Spieker said. “It was up to the mile relay team of Dexter Freeman, Jim Racer, Ricky Shaw and James Dennis to make the deciding finish.”
Spieker said that the teams ran evenly throughout the mile until James Dennis pulled ahead at the end to win by seconds. “Fans and teammates of both teams ran from side to side to encourage each runner,” Spieker said. “A deafening roar could be heard coming from the track area as each runner did his part.”
The Rappahannock boys finished with nine first places, six second place finishes and seven third places. Seniors placing first in their events were: James Dennis, high jump with 5’8” and the 400 dash with a time of 57.5; Jimmy Freeman, high hurdles with a time of 18.1 and the 300 hurdles with a time of 46.7; Ronnie Atkins, mile run with a time of 5:04.9 and the two mile run with a time of 11:06.8.
