Svahama and then pulled ahead up the stretch. Charlie Fenwick also made his challenge in the stretch aboard Arcadia Stable’s Snowmaker, passing Svahama to finish eight lengths behind Buck Bland and about the same ahead of the last horse.
Buck Bland, a 5-year-old gelding by Coquito out of Drylad, is owned by Barbara Morris of The Plains.
“This horse was named after Buck Bland, a black horseman who groomed and galloped the stallion and the mare,” said Ms. Morris after the race. “We tried (the horse) on the track but he was a rogue. Everyone gave up on him except me and Buck. We took him to Torrance and Charlie (Fleischmann) and they made a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.”
An open hurdle race, split into two divisions, followed the owner-rider timber race.
Paul B. Cramer Jr.’s Threatening Arch led wire-to-wire in the first division under the guidance of Gary Rose to win by three lengths. Hilary Thompson maneuvered James Treptow’s Arminius under the wire for second and Charlie Fenwick riding Mrs. Harry Duffey’s Investment Plan finished third.
In the second division John Fitzgerald led from the wire on Joseph Magner’s Winter Lift but was passed by Juliet Graham aboard Rep on the back
