Local residents in western Fairfax County say they’re going to spend their tax refunds this year. They were split on whether they were getting more back this year than last, but the made it clear that the money is definitely needed this year.
Loudoun Commissioner
Resigns
Lee T. Keyes, 66, Loudoun County’s Democratic commissioner of revenue since 1972, resigned Tuesday morning.
In a press conference where no questions were allowed, Keyes said his decision was prompted by a recent charge of driving under the influence made after a collision in Leesburg several weeks ago. On Monday, Keyes pleaded nolle contendre to the charge.
“If this had happened to one of my staff, that employe would have been asked to resign, and I can set no lower standards for myself,” Keyes said.
“I am indeed sorry and remorseful that this happened, but that does not correct the mistake. I do not want any actions of mine to have a negative impact on the operation of this office of which I have been proud for many years.”
His retirement will be effective June 30.
Board of Supervisors Chairman Frank Raflo (D—Leesburg), who along with County Administrator Philip Bolen attended Keyes’ press conference, said that Loudoun Circuit Court Judge Carleton Penn would have to appoint someone to fill out the commissioner’s term for the remainder of this year.
A special election will be placed on the regular General Election ballot this November when the voters of Loudoun will elect another commissioner of revenue.
