To ensure that the horse is not overly stressed or fatigued, several veterinarian stops are set up along the route to monitor the horse’s condition and determine if it is capable of continuing to the next station.
“The vet control is largely a sort of risk management,” says Mrs. Sutton. “The vets look for signs of fatigue appropriate to the amount of the ride left to go. The examination at the finish awards completion of the ride to horses that are uninjured.”
Besides preventing injury to the horse, many veterinarians use the data they collect from these rides for re- ’ search on the stresses and strains of long distance riding on the horse. Four months after the ride has ended contestants are sent a questionnaire about the condition of their horses as part of the scientific data.
Frizes are given to riders completing the course within a certain time, as long as their horses are healthy at the end of the ride. A prize is given to the first finisher, the best-conditioned horse, the top 10 riders and also to the first horses of different breeds to finish
