Many people in Rappahannock may not be aware of it, but there is a place nearby that offers swimming, horseback riding, tennis courts and other sports facilities. The public is not only allowed to make use of these facilities, but is encouraged to do so.
The recreational facilities are a part of the Northern Virginia 4-H Educational Center near Front Royal off of Route 522. The center’s 229 acres were previously a part of the calvary remount station, and the roughly $4 million facility has been built since 1980.
The day-to-day organization and fund raising for the center is handled by a private, non-profit group that formed in 1977 although the facility is owned by Virginia Polytechnic Institute. “Private donors and local governments are responsible for the facility,” said John E. Dooley, director of the center. “Few state and federal dollars come into the center.”
The center’s funding organization has been a complete success. “The center is unusual because it is entirely selfsustaining operationally using the funds from the participants in our programs,” Dooley said. “100 percent of
