The annual Farm Show and Sale held in Culpeper is four or five months away, but Rappahannock 4-H’ers planning to participate are going to use every bit of that time to prepare their animals.
For many of the 4-H’ers, the animal projects are an annual family affair with all of the children involved and the parents helping. With three children who have had animal projects for the past five years, the Adams’ of Flint Hill illustrate the family concept well.
April, Laura and Will Adams will be showing lambs and goats in this year’s show and sale. For Laura, the work with the goats has been continual, but now all three will start working with lambs for the show.
The three will be working with two lambs each during the next few months trying to get the lambs to just the right weight to be entered in the show. The lambs have to weigh at least 90 pounds by showtime, but a weight between 110 and 125 pounds means the lamb will be graded as a Blue-0 and will attract a better price at the sale.
“You have to pour a lot of feed into them in a short period of time to get them to gain that much weight, and just about all they do is eat,” said Laura. Laura and April will probably buy their two market lambs this year, but Will has picked out two possibilities
