Within the next week, Rappahannock will have its second medic unit become operational at the county’s first fire department.
Jhe 15 active members of the Washington Volunteer Fire Department, already devoting countless hours to provide emergency care and fire fighting services, will stretch themselves even more to provide advanced life support.
The medic unit will be the department s present ambulance with equipment for specialized care added. For a medic unit to operate, at least one trained cardiac technician has to be on duty. That meant that some of the volunteers would have to donate more of their time for the necessary training.
Fire Chief Roger Roach and fire department member Teddie Hannon took the training, and are now cardiac techs. A third member is in training. The medic unit will be operated on a part-time basis because both Roach and Hannon work.
The medic unit will be equipped with a heart monitor/defibulator with a phone patch and a med radio. The heart monitor/defibulator allows the cardiac tech to take an electrocardiogram (EKG) to trace the heartbeat of a patient in cardiac distress. The EKG can then be transmitted over the phone to the hospital using the phone patch.
