of what was to come. Mason’s first batter reached first on a line drive to the outfield. A few pitches later he stole second. Then he was knocked home when a grounder was too hot for a Panther infielder to handle. Mason added another run that inning and they were, so to speak, off and running with the score two zip.
In the bottom of the first inning it was three up and three down for Rappahannock. The Panthers first hit came from Porter when he drilled a grounder through the hole between third and short. Chucky Jenkins slammed Porter to third with a shot past the second baseman. The throw to third was late, allowing Jenkins to take second.
With no outs and men on second and third, the Panthers were in perfect scoring position. But they couldn’t send a runner home. Two of the next three batters fanned and the other hit a harmless infield bloop. In the bottom of the third the story was much the same. Greg Smith, who had a hot bat for Rappahannock, smacked the first of his two hits to centerfield. When lead-off batter H. B. Wood singled to right field Smith took second. The Panthers got a bad break when Mike Atkins’ grounder hit Wood as he was running to second. That’s an automatic out. So what looked like a possible bases loaded, no out situation, turned into one out with runners on first and second. The Panthers were still in scoring position.
But again Rappahannock couldn’t capitalize on its early inning hits. The next two batters struckout, stranding two men on base.
In the top of the fourth Mason put its first man on base. Porter whiffed the next batter. On a brilliant play, catcher Chucky Jenkins caught a thief who was trying to steal second. JenLeake

Former Rappahannock County High School standout Gary Leake assumes the reigns as a veteran pitcher on Shepherd College Rams pitching staff.
Leake, an integral part of Shepherd’s back-to-back West Virginia Conference championships, will be relied on to carry a young Ram staff this season.
The 6-4, 205-pound senior finished last season with an impressive 7-1 ledger and 2.53 ERA. Thus far he leads all Ram hurlers with 13 strikeouts.
Leake has started two Ram games thus far with an early season loss as his only decision.
