Tourism Funds

More than 300 Virginia travel and tourism leaders say that the state must increase tourism funding if Virginia is to compete aggressively and effectively with the other East Coast states.
That was one of eith recommendations they made at the Virginia Governor’s Conference on Travel and Tourism, held recently at the Richmond Marriott Hotel.
Tourism is the second largest industry in the state, and last year travelers spent $4.1 billion, for a 12 percent increase over the number of dollars spent in 1983.
As one measure of such growth, travel-related employment in Virginia increased in 19&4 to approximately 91,200, up 7.5 percent over the 84,650 jobs generated in 1983, according to Dr. Douglas Frechtling, director of the U.S. Travel Data Center in Washington, DC.
