Because of this discrepancy in volume, Askew thought that Rappahannock would stand little chance either of convincing the highway commission to lift the ban on Route 17 or of securing its own ban on big trucks.
“There are only two roads in Virginia where tractor trailers have been banned,” said Askew, referring to the difficulty of justifying to the highway commission the need to implement a ban. “This (the ban) is a precedent causing action.” Normally “if they’re licensed, truckers have the legal right to travel anywhere in Virginia.” “Fourlarnng” Route 17 will resolve the problem, said Askew.
A public hearing May 14 in Fauquier will give citizens the opportunity to comment on the specifics of the construction plan for Route 17. Informa- . tion gathered at that meeting will be transmitted to the highway commission’s meeting in June. Then the state will begin purchasing right of ways in July.
Askew said if all goes well the four-lane, divided highway on Route 17' will be completed in 1989.
