J. Kenneth Robinson of Winchester, retired Seventh District Congressman, received the Outstanding Virginian Award at ceremonies on May 11 at the Northern Virginia 4-H Educational Center near Front Royal. Previous recipients include former Governor Mills E. Godwin, Jr. and former U.S. Senator Harry F. Byrd, Jr.
In remarks before the presentation, Governor Robb said he had always admired and respected Robinson, and “that cuts across party lines.” The latter reference was to the fact that Robb is a Democrat while Robinson is a Republican.
“Two qualities epitomize all three recipients,” noted Robb: “1) a commitment to fiscal responsibility, and 2) personal integrity.”
Harry F. Byrd, Jr., the first recipient of the award, remarked that Robinson has the two commodities most in shortage in Virginia: 1) political courage and 2) sound common sense. When in Congress together, Byrd and Robinson often conferred with each other. Recalling those days, Byrd said he always wondered where he went wrong when one of his votes opposed Robinson’s.
After receiving the award, Robin>yton said he felt “somewhat uncomfortable” accepting the same award bestowed on such luminaries as Mills Godwin and Harry Byrd. “But that doesn’t mean I’m going to decline it,” Robinson quipped.
During the ceremonies, both Byrd and Robinson praised Governor Robb’s leadership of the state.
