The critical level of protein feeding differs with animal requirements and types of feeds (grains, legumes, grasses, etc.) and has been estimated at around 6 to 8 percent CP for cattle. The response of cattle to protein is easily demonstrated. As an example of the response to protein feeding, English workers increased the voluntary intake of oat straw by 40 percent and dry matter digestibility from 41 to 50 percent by ruminal infusion of urea. A response of this magnitude is more than enough to satisfy requirements of wintering cattle. Protein is the most costly nutrient in wintering rations, and replacing the protein lost in poor quality forages is expensive. The costs of supplementing protein can be eliminated if the protein that is available in spring growth is saved for winter rations.
