res of Winchester and Carolyn Shaw of Washington were awarded silver medals in the Maxima Cum Laude category, Aaron Barbour of Manassas, Beatri Jaramillo or Washington and Robert Roberts of Nokesville were winners in the Magna Cum Laude category. In the Cum Laude division, prizes were awarded to Morgan Andreae of Front Royal, Christopher Butler of Marshall. Adrian Filippi of Broad Run, Michael King of Midland, Candi Kobetz of Berryville, Keri Ann Nuti of Front Royal and Jill Wemmer of Front Royal.

Two Wakefield students placed in the Classical Association of Virginia English Essay Contest. Merren Booth of Vienna, Virginia for her essay, “A Day at the Colosseum," and Elise Maar for her essay, “Julius Caesar: A Better Statesman or Soldier?”

Tennis

The Wakefield Tennis Teams played three matches this week chalking up two wins and one loss. The girls’ team played St. James at the 4-H Center near Front Royal. The two teams played close matches for most of the afternoon until the third doubles match was won by Ann Dunning of Boyce and Sharon McAllister of Stephenson. In other matches of the afternoon, Wakefield’s number one seeded player, Valerie Steinier of Culpeper, lost a hardplayed match to St. James' number one player and Amy Schliem of Winchester won her match.

The boys’ team played two games this week. Wakefield lost to Randolph Macon Academy 8-1. The single win was earned by the number one doubles team of Russell Rowzie of Amissville and John Landis of Front Royal. In a separate match, Allen Grimm of Front Royal played a long, hard-fought series, finally losing 11-10.

Later in the week, the team played Blue Ridge and bounced back from their loss earlier in the week to win 8-1.

Next week the team will again take on Woodberry Forest and the seventh/eighth/ninth grade team will play Highland School.
