The 39 delegates, representing parts of Fauquier and Culpeper and all of Clarke, Rappahannock and Warren counties, decided not to cast their 39 votes but instead to nominate Guest by acclamation.

“It seems mechanical and automatic,” Mr. Marlow said of Mr. Guest’s nomination and added: “We feel we know the results of this legislative campaign this fall.” But he warned that Republicans in other parts of the state don’t have it so easy.

Mr. Guest is one of only 34 Republican representatives in Virginia’s 100member House of Delegates and the candidate talked more about other races than he did the 31st District, where he expects to be unopposed for the seat he has held for 14 years.
