what country is this girl from? It would seem to be America, but it isn t. She is from a place called Thessaloniki, Greece and her name is Josephine Nikolakaki. Forget about the pronunciations; you’ll never get them. Josephine is a Youth For Understanding (YFU) exchange student who has been staying with the Fisher family of Washington since August 21. She returns to Greece June 24.
Josephine’s host mother, Dawn Fisher, described in an interview what it was like to have an exchange student stay with them. “It’s an adjustment. It takes a lot of parenting. You can’t treat an exchange student’ like a guest or you’ll alienate your own children. The student has to carry out the garbage and do the dishes, and if their dirty clothes are not put in the hamper, then they don’t get done.”
Dawn said that after a year of staying with them, the exchange student becomes very much a part of the family. “Josephine brought a lot of happiness to us. She is such a happy person and it’s contagious.” According to Dawn, Josephine is a typical teenage kid: “I walk into the living room to turn the TV off and she turns it right back on.” That’s a good sign, though, because “the best part of the year is when ‘the student’ responds to you like a typical parent.
