United States Senator Paul Trible recently said- Virginians believe the federal deficit is the number one issue facing the country today. That is the preliminary finding of Senator Trible’s 1985 Questionnaire. The questionnaire was sent to nearly a million people and 100,000 responses were received. Out of those responses, 1,000 were chosen to represent the answers. The people who received the question had written Senator Trible at some time or their names were taken from other lists in the senator’s office.
“The results of the questionnaire show that Virginians are concerned about the deficit and want Congress to take strong and decisive action to restrain spending across the board.
“In addition, Virginians have called for reforming our tax code, a balanced budget amendment and line-item veto authority for the president.
“These are positions I have long advocated, and I will continue to fight to get our financial house in order,” Trible said.
Questionnaire results also show that Virginians feel the nation’s defense is adequate for national security, and they support a space-based defense and continued deployment of the MX missile system.
On international issues, a vast majority of those responding support increased aid to anti-Soviet rebels in Afghanistan, aid to anti-Sandinista rebels in Nicaragua and increasing American relief assistance to African famine victims.
