On Friday, May 17 and Saturday, May 18 the story of a fatherless teenager who learns the wisdom and skills of karate from a Japanese handyman will be shown at 7:30 p.m. at the Gay St. Theater. Note the change from the usual Saturday and Sunday schedule due to “The Evening of Modern Dance” performance Sunday night. The film is rated PG.
Benefit Auction At Amissville Fire Hall
A benefit auction will be held on Saturday, May 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Amissville fire hall. The event is being sponsored by the members of the Amissville Fire Department. Jaycees Meeting
The Rappahannock Jaycees will hold their regular meeting on Thursday, May 16 at 8 p.m. at Brambles Cafe. A social hour will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Modern Dance
On Sunday, May 19 at 7 p.m. in the Gay St. Theatre, five modern dance pieces will be performed. They include a duet choreographed by Laura Crowne entitled “The Ground Between Us”, performed by Crowne and Sally Nash; “Expected Arrivals” and "Taking Away”, choreographed by Maureen Day, a Rappahannock resident who is in the dance department at VCU; and two other works by VCU dance majors - “Caged Marbles” and “Intentions of Spring”.
The evening is sponsored by the Rappahannock Association for the Arts and the Community, a non-profit, volunteer organization. Admission is $5 (adults), $3 (students/seniors) and $4 (RAAC members). Tickets will be available at the door Call 675-3193 for more information.
Farmers and Artisans’ Market
There will be a Farmers and Artisans’ Market in Front Royal this summer. Featured will be baked goods, produce, and arts and crafts. For more information, contact the Warren County Extension Office at 635-4549.
Basketweaving Workshop
Janet Kerig is offering a one-day workshop in making a contemporary Appalachian Melon basket with wild grapevine handles and natural dyed splints. The session will be devoted to completing a basket.
The workshop will be presented at the Middle Street Gallery in historic Washington on Tuesday, May 21 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. The cost will be $45 with all materials included and pre-registration is required. To pre-register, call 987-8670 or 675-3440.
4-H Camp
4-H Junior High Camp for all young people ages 12, 13 and 14 will be held at the Northern Virginia 4-H Educational Center, Front Royal. The cost is $55 per person. Please call the Extension Office at 675-3619 for further information. Registration deadline is May 17.
