made her a more interested churchgoer. While still in Greece, Josephine wasn’t sure what America would be like. She had never been here before. She said the impression that Greeks have of Americans is that they’re all rich and have two big cars. “That’s what we see in the movies.”
Josephine could hardly believe she was on her way to this country. “I didn’t realize I was coming until I was in the plane. After the landing, she immediately got lost in the airport. “I get lost everywhere,” she said, “even in Little Washington.”
Dawn confirmed that Josephine had difficulty with directions n Washington. “It took her a month to learn whether to. turn left or right out the front door when going to babysit at the Hobson’s.” The Hobson’s live two houses away. Although by now she
has learned her way around town, there was a time when she used to get lost on the way to the post office.
An eleventh grader, Josephine had to begin school soon after arriving in Washington. That was scary for her. “It was like going to kindergarten for the first time. But people were very
