therefore, teachers should be happy with less pay. In the case of teachers, that is not a good argument.
Sure Rappahannock is a beautiful place to live, but a scenic landscape, though pleasant to look at, will not pay the rent or feed the children.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s estimate for 1984, a family of four making less than $10,610 a year is below the poverty level. The beginning salary for a teacher in Rappahannock is $12,540. That’s less than $2,000 away from being officially poor if you’re a married teacher with two children - presumably a typical situation.
The scenai.o is not only bleak for teachers. Students who have to put up with high teacher turnover rates lose out on quality in their education. It cannot be very- inspiring, from an educational standpoint, for students to watch their teachers continually move out of the county in order to make a living.
Of course the supervisors are right when they say Rappahannock is a special place to live, but we don’t think that justifies lower pay for teachers. Also, it would be both sad and ironic if children in Rappahannock received a poor education because they liyed in such a special place.
