Housing comment draws flack
A member of the board of directors of the Reston Home Owners Association felt the cruel wind of outrage from fellow Restonians for a statement he made opposing subsidized housing.
RHOA Director Dan McGuire said in a statement published in last week’s Reston Times that there should be no more subsidized housing in Reston and that the existing subsidized housing presidents should be moved elsewhere.
Local leaders responded this week, condemning McGuire for the “bigoted” statement and adding that Reston has a place for people from all walks of life, religion, economic standing and race.
School Board reverses
tuition vote
After letters of complaint from Fauquier teachers and taxpayers, the School Board on Monday reversed an April decision which would have forced non-resident students pay tuition.
Edwin Gulick (Cedar Run District) changed his vote on the policy and made a motion to give free education to the children of current school employees who live out of the county. Non-resident school personnel hired after July 1 must pay for their children’s tuition, which is more than $2,000 annually, according to School Superintendent S. Harold Lamm.
In April, Mr. Gulick and two other board members voted to make all nonresident employees pay their children’s tuition.
