Updike said that he knew there was no fat in the budget. “We have to set our priorities, though, and look at what will have the most impact on the system,” Updike said.
Board member Nancy Reeve said that the board would also have to be careful so that any budget cuts would not be viewed as sacrificing safety or building upkeep to the cause of salaries.
The board then began discussing the line items. A $5,000 reduction in the proposed budget for professional improvement was one of Estabrook’s recommendations that was accepted by the board. The line item for instructional supplies was cut by $5,000 with the cut to be shared equally between the two schools. “We’ll have to rely on our teachers being creative to save on those costs,” Updike said.
