$87,070 last year to $89,816 this year, an increase of almost $3,000. Although this figure seems small in terms of its addition to county coffers, its significance is in the larger amount it represents — an increase of almost $300,000 in taxable goods sold in small county businesses.
Because Rappahannock has not experienced overall population gains, figures seem to indicate that either people in the county have more money to spend or that people from outside county are spending more dollars here.
The Virginia Division of Tourism believes that the entire state has been quietly experiencing a dramatic increase in tourism that will continue through this summer. Last week, representatives from this state agency met with some Rappahannock merchants.
“What they told us (in meeting) really surprised me,” said Jim Swindler, whose family owns and operates Country Manor in Sperryville.
“It seems that Virginia leads the eastern part of this country in the growth of tourist dollars spent here,” said Mr. Swindler. “In fact, we’re second only to Florida in our number of tourists. Of course, they’re referring to the beaches, cities and Williamsburg as well as to the mountain resorts.”
Mr. Swindler said that while the growth of tourism is encouraging for the state as a whole, local developments are encouraging for this area in particular.
