“I want to sign the contract (for the option year) tonight, but I don’t want to take the Updikes to court to make them provide trash service to Rappahannock County,” added Chairman Gilkey.
Private citizens and businesses dispose of refuse in landfills outside the county; Community Trash could do the same, Supervisor Miller noted. “We want them to make a bonafide attempt to fulfill the contract. If they don’t think we’re going to do anything, they won’t try very hard,” he said. “You know that if you’re under duress, you find ways of doing things that you wouldn’t even think of if you weren't under duress. ”
Mr. Miller’s fellow supervisors agreed: The vote was unanimous to exercise the county’s option for extending the trash contract with the Updikes for another year.
“Any new developments from the people we’ve contacted for a landfill?” asked Supervisor Estes, apparently referring to a new site for the county’s solid waste disposal.
“No. They were supposed to get back with us by the first of this week,” answered Mr. Gilkey. “But I haven’t heard from them yet.”
