Kilpatrick, the “dinner guests” who would be the center of the attention lavished by the assembled staff.

The Kilpatricks arrived. The maids were posed on the second floor porch, their arms piled with sheets and towels. Gwen Jordan was installed on the sky suite balcony and ordered to hold up her hands to display golden stiletto nails. Willie Arias and Michael Dunn were ensconced with a bucket of potatoes to peel. Hotel Director Deborah Berens in elegant, slinky black sat at the reservation table, telephone to ear and pencil poised.

And the ominous gray clouds rolled closer.

“Hurry! Hurry! I felt a drop,” urged Joe McCullough, holding a piece of flapping black plastic out of camera range at the side of the building.

“Think positive!” admonished Charlie Tompkins as he and Henry Eastwood prepared to snap shutters on an impressive array of photographic equipment.

Michael D’Angelo played joker in the crowd. An impish grin under his tall white toque, he brandished a toilet plunger. Chef O’Connell pointed his finger menacingly, wagging it and shaking his head in the “no-no” generally reserved for small boys and mischievous puppies.

“You folks upstairs are doing great! I wish I could get the kitchen staff to cooperate,” complained Mr. Eastwood. “Be patient,” he told the muggers around the food table. “Only 30 (shots) to go!”

In between clicks of the camera, waitress Marcia Orrison shook out her arms to relieve muscles aching from holding high a tray of wine bottles and glasses.

“One more time with animation,” exhorted Mr. O’Connell. “Just a few more, This is the real one. The others were just practice!” he told the Inn’s staff of 35, punchy after a half hour of posing.

And the storm clouds rolled closer yet.

‘A little smile,” begged Mr. Eastwood after another 30 clicks of the shutter.

“Look like you’re enjoying this,” added Mr. Tompkins.

“Now he’s put the film in!” joked the world’s most widely syndicated political columnist.
