All-District honors. “Tommy Jenkins, who pitched 76 innings, more than any pitcher in the district, finished the season with more than 70 strikeouts as well.” Rightfielder H. B. Wood and catcher Chucky Jenkins earned first-team honors also, while centerfielder Rob Brown received an honorable mention in the balloting.
“The team hit well,” Coach Huddleston continued, noting that Rob Brown and H. B. Wood both batted over .400 for the year, while Chucky Jenkins, Greg Smith and Craig Williams all slugged to better than .300 averages on the season.
Asked about the team’s disappointing finish to a season which saw them win their first four games, Coach Huddleston replied, “We slipped from a positive attitude. We lost our confidence in the field, and at the plate. Our pitchers threw well, but you can’t make errors and win (ball games).” The coach was quick to add, however, that “I honestly don’t think that there is a better team in the league. We just need to regain that positive attitude. We have a young team, (and) good bench strength. I expect the boys who didn’t play as much this year to pick up the open spots next year.”
