Mr. Swindler added that state officials had met with local merchants to discuss the possibility of nearby counties cooperating in attracting tourism, with the help of the Virginia Division of Tourism.
“They’re certain that we’re right at the start of a real boom,” he said.
The National Park Service, which administers the Shenandoah National Park, agrees with the state’s predictions.
“We’re expecting a record year, all right,” said Bill Pierce* assistant chief ranger for the park. “We’re already up almost 2 percent (in park visits) and we’ve been told to expect to be very busy.”

Responding to numerous inquiries, Bruce A. Hundley, Social Security manager in Culpeper, said recently that a firm operating in the Rappahannock area is soliciting people through direct mail to purchase a service which is provided at no charge by every Social Security office.
The company obtains local birth records and then mails new parents an offer to get a Social Security number for their child for a $10 fee. This service can be obtained without charge at any Social Security office. In addition, the parent has to do everything for the company he or she would have to do if he or she contacted Social Security directly.
For a parent to obtain a Social Security number for a child, the parent needs evidence of the child’s date of birth, citizenship, and identity. The parent will also need evidence of his or her own identity.
